Based on a character from Tom Brown’s Schooldays, Flashman is an antihero, who runs from danger, betrays acquaintances, bullies & beats servants and beds any available woman. He describes himself as “a scoundrel, a liar, a cheat, a thief, a coward—and oh yes, a toady.”
These can be read in either publication or chronilogical order.
